Abortion is a medical procedure to terminate a pregnancy. Medication or surgery are abortion methods that can be used depending on the gestational age and the woman’s health.

Medication abortion involves using two drugs, mifepristone and misoprostol, to end an early pregnancy. Surgical abortion has two procedure options, vacuum aspiration and dilation and evacuation (D&E). The surgical abortion procedure needed will depend on the mother’s stage of pregnancy.

Abortion is a highly regulated procedure with laws varying significantly by country and region. It is essential for women to have access to safe and legal abortion services to avoid the risks associated with unsafe procedures, such as severe bleeding, infection, and infertility.

Comprehensive reproductive healthcare, such as contraception and education, can reduce the need for abortions. Emotional support and counseling are also important aspects of care, helping women navigate the complex emotions and decisions related to abortion.
